Alarming Rates of Text Neck Growing

The past few decades have seen a dramatic increase in the prevalence technology has in our lives.  From ultra-intelligent phones to self-driving cars, engineers and scientists are all working hard at ways to make our lives “easier”.  However, this stark change in the way we live our daily lives has also had its own set of unforeseen consequences.

Alarming parents and the medical world, new cases of what has been termed “text neck” have been popping up all over the country.  So what exactly is text neck and how can it be avoided?

Basically, text neck is a condition that results from excessive hours spent craning ones face over an object such as a phone or tablet. Resultantly, affected children are at risk for serious neck and spinal damage as well as misaligned growth, for their bodies are still continuously developing. We have been noticing the strange increase, patients initially complain of headache issues.  However, after a quick test, many are revealing more serious spinal and neck related issues.

"Instead of a normal forward curve, patients can be seen to have a backwards curve. It can be degenerative, often causing head, neck, shoulder and back pain.”

To prevent this issue from occurring in your life or the lives of your family members, do your best to avoid using your phone or table while lying in bed.  Additionally, it is suggested to raise computer monitors to eye-level.  And as always, conditions such as these are aggravated by a sedentary lifestyle.  As such, it is always important to spend time exercising and moving the body and less time browsing the internet or social media.  To learn more about how you can protect your spine and related nerves in your body, contact the Nerve Health Institute and let us help you understand further the risk factors of poor posture  and how if can effect your nerves.
