How We Support Our Patients Living With ALS

How We Support Our Patients Living With ALS

ALS Support in Lafayette, LA: Comfort, Function, and Quality of Life

Living well alongside your ALS care team — with attention to sleep, comfort, breathing, and daily function.

A jar lid that won’t turn. A foot that catches on the third stair. A voice that runs out of energy by evening. For most families, ALS begins with small things like these, followed by months of appointments before anyone puts a name to it. When the name finally arrives, it comes with more information than anyone can absorb in a single sitting.

This page is for people in that period, and for the families standing beside them.

What ALS Is, In Plain Terms

ALS — amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — is a progressive neurodegenerative condition affecting motor neurons, the nerve cells that carry signals from the brain and spinal cord out to the muscles. As those neurons change, the muscles they serve gradually weaken.

The name is descriptive rather than mysterious. Amyotrophic refers to muscle wasting. Lateral points to the side regions of the spinal cord where the affected nerve fibres run. Sclerosis describes the hardening that develops there.

Around 90 to 95 percent of cases are sporadic — they occur without a family history and without an identifiable cause. ALS is not brought on by stress, diet, or anything a person did or failed to do.

What ALS Leaves Intact

This is the part that often goes unsaid, and it shapes everything about daily life:

  • Touch, temperature, and the feeling of a hand held generally remain intact
  • Bladder and bowel control. Usually preserved until very late
  • Eye movement. Often retained, which is exactly what makes eye-gaze communication technology work
  • The senses. Sight, hearing, taste, and smell are typically unaffected
  • In many cases cognition is unchanged, and awareness remains throughout The person is still fully there. Connection, conversation, humour, and shared time all stay possible — and that is worth planning around from the very beginning.

Why No Two ALS Journeys Look the Same

Two people diagnosed in the same month can have very different experiences, and where the condition begins explains much of it.

Limb-onset ALS starts in an arm or leg — a weaker grip, a dropped foot, trouble with buttons or stairs. It accounts for roughly two thirds of cases.

Bulbar-onset ALS starts with speech and swallowing, often noticed as a change in voice quality.

Respiratory-onset ALS is less common and begins with breathing changes, frequently first noticed at night.

Rate of progression varies widely as well. General figures exist, but they conceal an enormous spread — a meaningful number of people live substantially longer, and some slowly progressive forms extend over decades. Your neurologist can give a far more individual picture than any average ever will.

The Care That Makes the Biggest Difference

If you take one thing from this page, take this: multidisciplinary ALS clinic care has the strongest evidence behind it of anything available. Neurology, respiratory therapy, nutrition, physical and occupational therapy, speech pathology, and social work coordinating in one place is associated with longer survival and better quality of life than care spread across separate offices.

Alongside that, four things consistently improve how people live:

  • Respiratory support, which improves sleep, energy, and mental clarity — and is often started later than it needs to be
  • Nutritional support, because maintaining weight and calorie intake genuinely matters
  • Physical and occupational therapy, to maintain range of motion, prevent falls, and adapt the home as needs change
  • Voice banking and communication technology, done early while speech is still clear

Where The Nerve Health Institute Fits

We work alongside your ALS clinic, never instead of it.

What we offer is attention to the daily foundations that shape how someone actually feels: sleep quality, breathing mechanics, hydration, positioning, comfort, stress load, and gentle movement within safe limits. Dr. Chris Cormier, DC has spent nearly three decades working with people managing complex neurological conditions, and every consultation begins with a detailed personal history rather than a symptom checklist.

Our approach centres on the OWL Method — Oxygen, Water, and Light — the three inputs your cells depend on every day. Many people arriving here with a complex neurological picture have never had anyone map the full sequence of their health in one sitting. That exercise doesn’t change a diagnosis, but it very often clarifies what someone wants to prioritise in the time and energy they have.

BodyChargers by Dr. Chris extends that same education into the home, with practical guidance on breathing, sleep, hydration, and daily rhythm for the whole household.

Families and Caregivers Are Part of This

ALS reaches everyone in the home. Caregiver strain is substantial and consistently under-addressed, and asking for help early works far better than waiting until capacity runs out.

Multidisciplinary clinics typically include social work and can connect families with respite care, equipment loan programmes, counselling, and support groups. The ALS Association maintains local chapters with practical resources across Louisiana. Our door is open to caregivers too — the same foundations of sleep, breathing, and stress apply just as much to the person doing the caring.

What We’re Honest About

ALS has no cure, and nothing offered here reverses ALS, slows its progression, or replaces neurological care. We say this plainly because families facing this diagnosis are frequently approached by clinics selling hope, and time, money, and energy are finite here — they deserve protecting.

What honest supportive care can offer is comfort, function, dignity, and better days. In a diagnosis that asks so much of a family, those are not small things.

If you’d like to explore nervous system support and quality of life alongside your existing ALS care, The Nerve Health Institute in Lafayette welcomes local and visiting patients for educational consultations. For clinical guidance, trial information, and local services, the ALS Association and your ALS clinic team remain the right first call.

Your Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

No. ALS is a neurodegenerative condition in which motor neurons progressively change. It is sometimes confused with autoimmune conditions because it involves the nervous system and shares early symptoms with disorders such as multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis. The distinction matters, because it determines which treatments are appropriate and which specialists should be involved.

There is currently no cure for ALS and no treatment shown to reverse it. Approved medications offer modest benefit, and supportive interventions — particularly respiratory support and multidisciplinary clinic care — meaningfully improve quality of life. Be cautious of any clinic claiming to reverse ALS; documented reversals generally reflect an initial misdiagnosis of a different, treatable condition.

No. ALS is not caused by stress, diet, or lifestyle choices. Around 90 to 95 percent of cases occur sporadically with no identifiable cause. Managing stress remains worthwhile for sleep and comfort, but it is neither a cause nor a treatment.

Connect with a multidisciplinary ALS clinic — the intervention with the strongest evidence behind it. Ask about baseline respiratory testing, nutritional assessment, and voice banking while speech is still clear. Contact the ALS Association for local support services. And give yourself permission to take this in stages; you do not need to decide everything at once.

Supportive care can help with sleep, comfort, stress, positioning, and daily function, all of which genuinely affect quality of life. It does not alter the disease course. Any complementary approach should sit alongside ALS clinic care rather than replace it, and it’s worth telling your neurology team about anything you’re trying — particularly supplements, which can interact with medications.

ALS affects the whole household. Multidisciplinary clinics typically include social work and can connect families with respite care, equipment loans, counselling, and support groups. The ALS Association maintains local chapters. Asking early works better than waiting.

I don't write reviews often. So when I do, it's because I really think it's worth it. I had trouble from a neck surgery that I had back in 2018. Hands and arms were going numb. Had weakness in my arms and oftentimes a good bit of pain in my shoulders and neck. I did injections. I saw other doctors who told me that I'd likely have to have another surgery, which I definitely did not want to do, but it seemed like my options were running out. I found The Nerve Institute online one day and thought I'd give it a try. Dr. Cormier listened to me and asked me questions each time I visited, and worked with me step by step. I have felt MUCH better, and have had much less problems with my hands and neck. All of his staff are great and very helpful. I recommend him to others that I know when I hear that they are having similar problems that I had. Very thankful the Lord steered me in his direction. I recommend that you at least give it a try, and I hope that you will be helped by them like I was.

Visiting the Nerve Health Institute was truly a life-changing experience. I traveled all the way from Virginia, and my mom came from Massachusetts, and it was absolutely worth the trip. From the moment I walked in, I felt cared for and supported. The environment is calm, welcoming, and filled with hope. The treatments were unlike anything I’ve experienced before, gentle yet incredibly effective. During the first couple of days, I could tell my body was beginning to rebalance. By the end of the week, I had a clear plan for how to take care of my body and, for the first time in years, could actually feel the healing happening. Dr. Chris Cormier is unlike any doctor I’ve ever met. He’s extremely knowledgeable and truly gifted at finding the root cause. Something traditional doctors have never been able to do for me, even after years of searching and getting sicker. For the first time, I feel genuine hope and can see real changes in my body. The staff is compassionate, knowledgeable, and deeply committed to helping you heal. They take time to explain everything clearly and ensure you feel comfortable and understood. It’s obvious they care deeply about every patient’s journey toward better health. If you’re looking for a place that treats the root cause, not just the symptoms, I can’t recommend the Nerve Health Institute enough. It’s a special place where real healing begins.
